Typical car accident injuries

The injuries you suffer, and the subsequent impact they have on your life, depend upon the circumstances of the accident. For example:

  • A car on the other side of the road strays into your lane, causing a head-on collision. Upper or lower limb fractures are relatively common, caused by energy passing through the steering wheel or pedals.
  • A defective tyre blows out on the motorway, making your car spin into the central reservation. Car accident injuries associated with side impacts include whiplash, arm, shoulder and chest injuries.
  • Another driver crashes into the car from behind. Whiplash injuries are fairly common with this type of accident, particularly if your car is stationary.

Preventing car accident injuries

There are a number of simple steps you can take to prevent car accident injuries should you be involved in a road accident.

If you're a driver or passenger you should always wear your seatbelt, for example. Cyclists should ensure they are as visible to other motorists and pedestrians as possible, particularly when it's dark, by attaching appropriate lighting and reflective gear to themselves and their bicycle. Pedestrians should always take care when crossing roads and use the appropriate crossings provided.
